July 4th - I was involved in a Car Accident

Welcome to The Lost Link.

I am going to bring you in to my personal life, in a very, very, up close and personal way. The excerpt posted below is from an automobile accident which occurred on Friday, July 4th, 2008. The events listed below appear in descending order (the latest to the initial incident).

7.8.08 - As it stands, I still do not have possession of my vehicle due (Since July 4th) to a pending investigation by the State Police and the Police Report is not ready yet. I was told the Police Report would be prepared by Tuesday, July 8, 2008. I was also informed that my vehicle would be available on Monday, July 7, 2008. A call was placed to the towing company Roberts, and they stated that I wouldn’t be receiving the car until the State Police gives them permission to release the vehicles.

Injured pedestrians remain hospitalized

MILFORD — One of the pedestrians hurt in a wild five-car pileup early Saturday on Interstate 95 remains in critical condition, but another has improved to serious condition.Lisa Sanchez, 30, of Parrott Drive, Shelton, and Norma Sanchez, 33, of North Cliff Street, Ansonia, were listed Monday in serious and critical condition, respectively, by the Hospital of St. Raphael in New Haven and Yale-New Haven Hospital.

Police said both women suffered upper-body trauma.

“They’re expected to survive,” said Lt. J Paul Vance, the State Police spokesman.

They and 21-year-old Antonio Dossantos, of Poplar Street in Bridgeport, were severely injured Saturday after their car spun out in a light rain while trying to merge onto northbound I-95 at the exit 38 junction.

State police said the incident took place shortly after midnight when Lisa Sanchez lost control of the 2000 VW Jetta she was driving and it whipped around 180 degrees.

The women left the stopped car, which was in the highway’s center lane facing approaching traffic. They were on foot near exit 38 when three other cars hit their car, according to police.

“It all happened out of nowhere,” said David Pacheco Jr., 29, of Stratford, who said he swerved into the median lane to avoid hitting one of the women and was pushed into the Jersey barrier by another car.

“All I saw was a girl jump into the left lane. I was wondering, ‘What can a human possibly be doing in the middle of I-95 at midnight?’ ”

Dossantos was hit by another driver trying to avoid the chaos, police said. He was listed in serious condition Saturday night, but discharged Sunday from Yale-New Haven.

The accident is still under investigation and will likely take several weeks to reconstruct, Vance said.

He said no charges had been filed as of Monday.

The three drivers who hit the VW and three passengers were treated at Milford Hospital and released. A fourth passenger was treated and released from Yale-New Haven.

The accident was among 233 in the state over the July 4 holiday weekend — people were injured in 42 of the crashes and four people were killed, according to state police.

“MY ATTEMPT TO CORRECT THE INCORRECT CHAIN OF EVENTS”
I decided to personally approach the Connecticut Post on Monday, July 7, 2008 to have the corrections made instantly. The result of my visit goes as follows: I spoke with Ted Tompkins Asst. Editor at the Conn Post. He took my information and informed me that I would receive a call from a write who will be writing an update on the accident. Later that day I received a call from Noelle.
“Copy of my email to the Editor asking that a correction be made.”

Dear Editor,I am writing in regards to an article which was written by: Ken Dixon and printed in the Sunday, July 6, 2008 edition of the Connecticut Post titled: 5 cars involved in I-95 chaos.

“Excerpt of the original article as posted on: Connpost.com - http://www.connpost.com/localnews/ci_9797295″

State police said the three pedestrians were thrown to the pavement by the impact of the collision, which spun the VW into the median, where it crashed into a Jersey barrier, then bounced back into the left lane. The VW was then struck by a 1995 Nissan Maxima operated by David Pacheco Jr., 29, of Barnum Avenue, Stratford, who police said tried to avoid a collision by swerving into the median.

“Correct chain of events per David Pacheco Jr.”
The statement which was posted is not how the accident transpired. This is the accurate chain of events: a woman stood in the left lane, waving her hands at eye level, which prompted me to swerve into the median lane to avoid coming in contact with her. My vehicle was then struck by a vehicle on the passenger side which pushed my car (1995 Nissan Maxmima) into the Jersey barrier. The force of the impact caused the 1995 Nissan Maxima to end up approximately 50 yards away from the wreckage, still in the median lane.

If the statement that was printed was valid, there would have been massive damage to the front end of my vehicle. How can we get this statement corrected, to prevent false judgement and accusations? Thank you greatly for your time and understanding in this matter.

Sincerely,

David Pacheco Jr.

5 cars involved in I-95 chaos

MILFORD — Three people were severely injured early Saturday after the car in which they were driving spun out in a light rain while trying to merge onto the northbound section of Interstate 95.The trio exited the stopped car and were on foot near Exit 38 when their vehicle was struck by three other cars. A fourth car then hit one of the pedestrians, identified as Antonio Dossantos, 21, of Poplar Street, Bridgeport.

State Police said the incident occurred shortly after midnight, when a 2000 VW Jetta driven by Lisa Sanchez, 30, of Parrott Drive, Shelton, lost control while merging onto I-95 at Exit 38 and spun around 180 degrees on the wet pavement.

The vehicle stopped in the center lane, facing oncoming traffic. The driver and two passengers, Dossantos and Norma Sanchez, 33, of North Cliff Street, Ansonia, all exited the car and were on foot when a 2002 Nissan Altima, driven by Paul F. Violano, 23, of Alps Road, Branford, struck the Jetta head-on.

“I didn’t see anything,” Violano said in a phone interview from his home Saturday night, adding that he only remembers seeing headlights glaring straight at him in the center lane.

“I didn’t know if they were coming at me or not,” he said, recalling that he had just enough time to start braking before the crash.

The VW was then struck again, head-on, by a 1997 Acura operated by John Sykes, 39, of Candee Avenue, West Haven. The VW finally came to rest in the center lane.

At that point, a 1996 VW Jetta driven by Jeanette Cal, of Burritt Avenue, Stratford, that was in the center lane, moved to the left to avoid the other VW and the Altima, but struck Dossantos, police said. Dossantos was listed in serious condition at Yale New-Haven Hospital Saturday night. Police said the incident caused trauma to his abdomen.

Norma Sanchez was listed in critical condition Saturday night in the surgical intensive-care unit at Yale New-Haven. State police said she sustained a trauma to her upper body and head. Lisa Sanchez was listed in critical condition Saturday night in the Hospital of St. Raphael in New Haven. Police said she sustained a “serious” upper-body trauma.

Pacheco complained of back and shoulder pain and was taken to Milford Hospital.

Sykes, who was driving four passengers, complained of minor injuries and was also taken to Milford Hospital. A passenger in his car, Anivelca Lopez, 33, of Candee Avenue, West Haven, complained of neck and back pain and was transported by emergency crews to Yale-New Haven, where she was treated and released.

Another passenger, Leonard Cameron, also of Candee Avenue, West Haven, was transported for precautionary reasons to Milford Hospital.

A third passenger, Richard Knecht, 25, also of Candee Avenue, West Haven, was taken to Yale-New Haven as a precaution and was treated and released.

The fourth passenger, Ramona Lopez, 36, of New York City, complained to minor injuries and was taken to Milford Hospital, police said.

Violano said he was released from Milford Hospital after X-rays were taken. Milford Hospital officials said Saturday night that none of those taken there were admitted, so they presumably were treated in the emergency room and released.

The accident is still under investigation, police said.

July 5th, 2008 - 6:30 AM.

The accident occurred at 12:03 AM on Friday, July 4th, 2008. I instantly tried to contact my parents because I just left my house. To my surprise, no one answered the phone and I called several times (4 in total). Secondly, I tried to reach iCON the Mic King but he wasn’t available because he was watching a movie. Reason I called him up second was because I was en route to the place he was located at. Thirdly, I called my Queen, who answered immediately and I gave her the super quick rundown with the don’t get nervous disclaimer. I tried contacting iCON again, no good.

I was voluntarily taken to Milford Hospital via an Ambulance that had another person in it. Come to find out the person in the ambulance was none other than, Paul F. Violano. He mentioned that he hit a car head on and he would never drive again because of it. 1:10 AM, i’m in the Emergency Room in Bed number 4, then my phone read “Incoming call”, who could it be? None other than iCON the Mic King! I’ll be there in 20 minutes, and sure enough there he was, to provide support in a time of need. He remainded in the hospital from 1:30 AM until 6 AM to make sure I was taken care of properly by the Staff. That’s what I call a BEST FRIEND for real!! Based on my recollection of the accident, he’s the reason my car was struck on the passenger side. Had he been able to avoid the car in front of him, I would’ve been in the clear. I have no idea what would occur with my vehicle. I found out that Robert’s Towing Company in Milford, CT removed my car from the scene without my knowledge or consent and they open up at 8 AM.
